Xi’an Declaration of 2014 Asian Food Study Conference

THE SILK ROAD OF ETERNALITY:

ROOTED CULTURES AND BOUNDLESS CIVILIZATION

To all participants at Asian Food Study Conference:

Global village is a common, cordial term.

Well, the Earth is very small, either in the Universe or Internet. Yet this tiny global village is our big family.

Since the earliest settlement on the home village, humans have been studying the present, exploring the future, and keeping review of the past. The latest research findings indicate that our very first villagers were born in the cradle land called Africa 4.5 million years ago. After that, their descendants kept eating on their way all along, distributed in succession everywhere in this world. Because of various natural environments, our ancestors appeared gradually different in physiques and skin colors. Due to the peoples’ diversified experiences in food gathering, production and dietary, diverse languages and cultures also formed.

Due to the limitations of information technology, our brothers and sisters around the global village had very few contacts for a long time. They seemed to live inside their own yards, seldom communicate with their neighbors, and might even close doors to any visitors. Nevertheless, no matter how many distinctive cultures there existed, for every culture, the food and foodway may vary.

About 30 centuries ago, the peoples, who were long scattered or isolated around the world, became suddenly eager to look for their sisters and brothers. As Confucius said in sigh, “It is always a pleasure to greet a friend from afar.” Such friends afar have covered very long journeys such as the Silk Road that connects Asia and Europe, The Silk Road is firstly a road for food ingredients, foodstuffs, foodways, and food civilization.

Since peoples communicated with one another in the global village, the Silk Road remains a symbol for diverse culture exchanges, implying enjoyable food and drink, mutual assistance, rooted cultures, and boundless civilization. To date, it becomes a manifesto on the wall of Food and Agriculture Organization Headquarters of the United Nations, “Food for all”, in multilingual versions. Unfortunately, one eighth of the world’s population suffers from starvation. Imaging that when 800 million pairs of starving eyes stare at us, how could we enjoy at our dinner table without any harmony and delight in a real sense?

Therefore, we, 150 scholars from 20 countries and regions from the Earth Village, are stepping on the eastern start point of the Silk Road pioneered 20 centuries ago, at this 2014 Asian Food Study Conference in Xi’an, let’s undertake this mission and now, I’d like to appeal you all to:

1. Carry forth the spirit of “Rooted Cultures, Boundless Civilization”, respect every kind of food culture, and promote friendly exchanges among different food cultures.

2. Advocate civilized foodways, foster a healthier production and life for food.

3. Gather food scholars worldwide and work in all endeavors for the undertaking of food studies.
